Considering the balance of our gut bacteria influences so many aspects of our health and wellbeing, it may not come as a surprise to learn that your gut microbiome can have a great significance when it comes to fertility (in both men and women) too. New research has shown how poor gut health can cause an oestrogen imbalance, which may lead to infertility issues such as endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome and testicular dysfunction.

The gut-fertility connection is certainly gaining a lot of interest in the world of women’s health, and there is a growing body of evidence to delve into. One recent study demonstrated how women with recurrent pregnancy loss were found to have abnormal gut permeability, which has been shown to contribute to inflammatory reactions in the body. The researchers hypothesised that the inflammatory reaction caused by leaky gut may be contributing to miscarriage pathogenesis, hence looking after your gut may be an important consideration when trying to conceive.
