The gut-brain axis and neurological symptoms associated with Covid-19

What is the link between the gut-brain axis, COVID-19 and neurological symptoms? By Science Direct

Find out more about these new challenges for neuroscientists.

A recent paper published in the journal Brain, Behaviour & Immunity – Health examined the neurological symptoms associated with infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Key highlights from the study include:

  • The SARS-CoV-2 virus can reach the brain via the gut-brain axis or the trigeminal and vagus nerves, resulting from systemic Covid-19 infection.
  • The virus disrupts the blood-brain barrier, and can cause inflammation, hypoxia, and secondary infections.
  • Covid-19 can cause cerebrovascular, sensitive, motor, cognitive and diffuse brain disorders.

Therefore, the neurological effects of Covid-19 raise a new challenge for neuroscientists.
