New study explores the effect of Symprove against bacteria causing diarrhoea

A laboratory study has shown the multi-strain liquid probiotic Symprove to be effective in inhibiting the growth of harmful bacteria associated with diarrhoea.

Bacterial pathogens are a leading cause of infectious diarrhoea and can be challenging to manage clinically, particularly with concerns around antimicrobial resistance from antibiotic use.

Probiotics have garnered attention as a promising non-antibiotic intervention for maintaining gut health and combating gut infections, particularly as they have a strong safety profile and are very unlikely to drive antimicrobial resistance.

Published in BMC Microbiology, the study was conducted independently by microbiologists at the University of Ghana. The aim was to evaluate the potential of Symprove in inhibiting diarrheal pathogens, specifically Vibrio cholerae (which causes cholera), Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus (associated with food poisoning).

Using their laboratory model, researchers demonstrated that Symprove “exhibits significant inhibitory effects against key diarrheal pathogens such as V. cholerae, E. coli, S. aureus, and L. monocytogenes”. These findings are also consistent with other laboratory studies exploring the effect of Symprove against gut pathogens, including E. Coli, Clostridium Difficile, MRSA and Shigella species.

The authors conclude that Symprove has the potential to support the management of gut infections caused by these pathogens, but more research is needed.
