How is Symprove made?
Symprove is made in a controlled environment through a series of carefully controlled stages. First we boil specially selected grain to create a wort. The wort is purified and sterilised and following this, the temperature is controlled in sterilised vats and the four strains of bacteria are carefully introduced. The live bacteria begin to divide and once the required levels are reached, the process is halted and Symprove is ready for bottling once it’s been tested by an independent laboratory. Throughout every stage, the bacteria are carefully nurtured as they are living organisms. The bacteria we use are high purity laboratory cultures which are unique to Symprove.
Is Symprove a prebiotic or probiotic?
Symprove is a food supplement which contains live bacteria in a barley extract. The bacteria may be considered probiotics, and the barley extract a prebiotic. However, the use of both these terms is not permissible in commercial communications under European food law.
Is there any research into Symprove?
Symprove has a strong Research & Development Programme and is constantly improving its products. We are researching two main areas. Firstly, the effectiveness of the delivery system, where we work extensively with independent laboratories and Healthcare Professionals to make sure our delivery system is as good as it can possibly be. In fact, breakthrough independent research by University College London (UCL) shows that Symprove met all three challenges to be able to arrive, survive, thrive and colonise in the gut.

What health claims can Symprove make?
Regulatory law means that probiotics are categorised as food products and cannot make health claims. In addition, it is now no longer permissible to use the word probiotics in consumer marketing materials. Many people believe that taking products containing live bacteria are important tools for a healthy lifestyle.

What is Symprove?
Symprove is a water-based formulation that contains four unique strains of live activated bacteria. Because of this unique formulation Symprove will not trigger digestion, meaning the bacteria are able to:

What is the 12 week programme?
Symprove comes in packs of four x 500ml bottles. Each single bottle will last you 7-8 days on the 12 week programme. Your 12 week programme will consist of three four-packs. We want you to use Symprove for at least 12 weeks as it can take time for dietary changes to take effect. British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines also recommend 12 weeks when trying bacteria-based supplements.
Each morning, on an empty stomach, take a 70ml dose using the cup provided in the box, and leave it a minimum of ten minutes before eating and drinking anything.
If you have purchased all 12 bottles in one go, please ensure you start your 12 week programme straightaway because of the shelf-life of the product.

We offer free next working day delivery by courier on all four-pack purchases if you order by 4pm.
Delivery days are Monday to Friday. You will receive tracking details from the courier together with a 1 hour time slot, on the day of delivery by email or text. The courier offers you full control of the parcel, including the ability to deliver to an alternative address, or requesting the parcel be left safely on your property.
What does Symprove taste like?
Symprove is available in 2 flavours
The original flavour has a malty, grain-like taste, sharper and earthier than the mango. With acidic tones.
Mango and Passionfruit
The mango and passionfruit has a fruity sweetness and is a less complex flavour. There’s a slight underlying tartness.
Is your packaging recyclable?
We are committed to reducing our impact on the environment through our packaging. We have recently upgraded our bottles to PET plastic (the world’s most recycled plastic) to ensure that they are more widely recycled; our outer packaging is also fully recyclable.
Can I overdose?
As Symprove is classed as a food supplement opposed to a medication you cannot overdose however we advise for an adult to take just one full 70ml dose daily (full measuring cup). We have only ever completed any clinical trials on the full 70ml dose therefore we have no reason to advise you to take any more than this. For children the dosage differs slightly, we would advise 1ml per kilo of body weight (20kilo = 20ml dose / 35kilo = 35ml dose etc) the only reason we advise the lower dosage is to give their microbiome a little more time to get used to the product as they are still developing.
Can I still take my other supplements?
Yes. Symprove is fine to take with other supplements.
Can I take Symprove and alcohol?
Alcohol can have a strong negative effect on your gut bacteria. We recommend alcohol is avoided for a few hours after taking Symprove.
Can I travel with Symprove?
Many customers travel successfully with Symprove and we ship it all over the world. If you can put it in the refrigerator when you get to your destination that’s great, but if not just try and keep it in a cool place and it should be ok.
Can Symprove survive at ambient temperatures?
The bacteria in Symprove easily survive in ambient temperatures. Once you open a bottle of Symprove, please pop in the fridge to maximise shelf-life. If you are travelling abroad with Symprove, it can go in the hold of an aeroplane without any problems. If your destination is warm/hot and you do not have access to a fridge, we recommend you fill a sink with cold water and keep your Symprove in it to keep cool. Remember to change the water regularly to try and keep it as cool as you can. We have many flight attendants who take Symprove and this was a top tip from them!
Does Symprove need to be kept in the refrigerator?
Once opened, Symprove should be kept in the refrigerator. Ideally, unopened bottles should be refrigerated, however if this is not possible don’t worry. Symprove is a robust product and as long as you don’t expose it to extremes of heat or cold, it should be fine.
How long do I need to take Symprove?
In order to keep your gut bacteria in balance once the 12 week programme is complete, we recommend that you continue to take Symprove – why not consider a subscription?
How much Symprove should I take?
Simply fill the small cup (70ml) provided with your bottle of Symprove and take every morning on an empty stomach. Wait 10 minutes (ideally) before eating or drinking then continue with your day as usual. Each cup contains about 10 billion live colony forming units.
How should I look after Symprove?
Before opening, Symprove should be stored in a cool dark place.
Once opened, keep in the fridge and consume within 10 days of opening.
Do not freeze or heat as this will kill the bacteria.
Should I take Symprove during/following antibiotics?
Yes, it’s always helpful to top up your gut during or after antibiotic treatment to maintain balance in the gut. Whilst antibiotics usually help to get on top of illness, they can also destroy the ‘beneficial’ bacteria in the gut at the same time.
We recommend that you take Symprove at a different time to your antibiotics if possible – remember that ideally you should take Symprove a minimum of 10 minutes before eating or drinking to allow it to pass through the stomach to successfully arrive, survive and thrive in the gut.
Should I take Symprove with food?
We recommend you take Symprove first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before breakfast. Ideally, you should wait a minimum of 10 minutes before eating and drinking to allow Symprove the best chance of reaching your gut quickly and begin colonising. If you do eat immediately afterwards or drink Symprove with food, it won’t do you any harm, but it may slow down the delivery of Symprove. If you forget to take Symprove first thing and have eaten, allow two hours after eating and then take Symprove.
What happens if I miss a dose?
The recommended dose of 70ml a day is to ensure that colonisation of the gut is maintained by the bacteria within Symprove. Each person has a different gut microbiome and may be affected differently by missing a dose or stopping Symprove. Whilst there may be no obvious change to your body, we advise that you return to a daily recommended use as soon as possible.
What is the shelf life for Symprove and how should it be stored?
Symprove is bottled as a live culture but it can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place. The shelf-life is three to four months (please read the best before date which is printed on the bottle). Once opened, keep refrigerated but do not freeze or heat as this will kill the bacteria.
Are there any contraindications?
The majority of our customers do not receive any contraindications from Symprove however some customers do experience slight side effects at the beginning of their journey. Side effects will be showing you that the bacteria has managed to get to where it needs to be and it is getting to work however if the gut is not used to receiving this it can be a bit of a shock which is what can bring the effects on for a short period of time. If we hear of anything it will usually be a slight loosening of stools or constipation. All side effects should gradually ease off the more your gut gets used to the bacteria you are introducing daily. Please also note that we are a customer care team therefore you are more than welcome to contact us to discuss your journey.
Can Symprove be used whilst breast-feeding/pregnant or if I am immune compromised?
Symprove is a safe food supplement. If you are on medication please check your medicine leaflet for any foods to avoid. However, if you are unsure, please speak to your healthcare practitioner.
Symprove is a food supplement that contains live and activated bacteria; it does not contain any of the food ingredients recommended for avoidance during pregnancy and breast-feeding. However, as with any significant dietary changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, we would always recommend that you check with your healthcare professional first.
For people who are immune compromised, we would recommend you take a copy of the label and discuss suitability with your healthcare professional.
Can you give Symprove to children?
As Symprove is a natural food supplement, it is suitable for children at the parent/carer's discretion. A dose of 1ml per kg of weight should be used.
Does it work for everyone?
The majority of our customers report a benefit when used with a balanced diet and lifestyle.
Does Symprove have any side effects?
It is important to remember that in a very few cases, during the early days of taking Symprove, some people experience loosening of the stools as their body adjusts to the new bacteria. This is perfectly normal and should soon settle (continue to take Symprove every day even if this happens).
Does Symprove work with the FODMAP diet?
Many clinicians and customers have used Symprove alongside the FODMAP diet. We would recommend talking to a healthcare professional regarding the two working together. If you want to know more about FODMAP diets, please consult your healthcare professional, dietitian or nutritional therapist.
Is Symprove a natural product?
Most of the ingredients in Symprove are naturally occurring, from the barley to the beneficial bacteria that make it their home. The only additional ingredients are vitamin C, potassium sorbate and trisodium citrate which are found in everyday foods, we also use natural flavours for the Mango & Passion Fruit flavour, having carefully tested the stability of the flavoured product before release.
Are there any allergens in the product?
Symprove is non-dairy, gluten-free, and vegan friendly. It does not contain any animal products. To check whether it is suitable for you please make sure you read the ingredients list before you use our product.
Is Symprove dairy-free?
Symprove does not contain any dairy.
Is Symprove gluten-free?
Symprove is gluten-free according to the Codex standard of <20ppm. Whilst barley, which contains a form of gluten, is used to make the liquid in which we grow the Symprove bacteria, the production process is carefully controlled to limit the release of gluten from the barley, and the barley grain is not included in the finished product. Compliance with the Codex standard for gluten free is confirmed with regular testing of batches of our finished Symprove products.
Is Symprove suitable for vegans?
Yes. Symprove does not contain any animal products in the formulation so it is suitable for vegans.
What are the active ingredients in Symprove?
The active ingredients in Symprove are four live, activated lactic acid bacteria species:
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus
- Enterococcus faecium
- Lactobacillus acidophilus
- Lactobacillus plantarum
All four species of bacteria have a history of safe use in food.

Can anyone have a Symprove subscription?
Absolutely! However, we would recommend that new customers start with a 12 week pack to ensure your gut has adequate time to adjust to the product. This is simply because a 6 or 12 month contract ties you in for that period. See ‘Which subscription is right for me?’ for more details on the plans we offer.
When is my payment taken?
Your payment will be taken at the point of set-up and the product will arrive the next working day (for all orders placed before 4pm). Subsequent payments will be taken from your card on the same date each month. You will be notified by email 7 days before each payment is processed.
How is my subscription delivered?
All orders placed before 4pm will be delivered next working day, Monday – Friday (excluding bank and public holidays). We use DPD for all UK deliveries and have consistently found them to offer the best service to our customers. You will receive tracking details on the day of despatch and amendments / instructions to your delivery driver can then be made directly with DPD using the information provided.
Can I have a subscription delivered abroad?
The subscription programme is currently only available to UK customers. This may change in the future – please give us your details if you’d like us to let you know. We do offer delivery of the 12 week pack abroad. See our shipping policy for more information.
How do I make changes to my subscription?
Most changes can be made to your subscription through your customer online account. Alternatively, please phone 01252 413600 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can make changes up to 48 hours before your delivery is due. Once your order has been processed (and an order number has been issued) it is not be possible to amend or cancel your order.
Can I switch flavours once my subscription is set up?

Can I cancel/pause my subscription?
You can cancel or pause your monthly flexible subscription at any time.
If you subscribe to the 6 or 12 month plan you may cancel your subscriptions (on a non-refundable basis) by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org. For the avoidance of doubt, if you cancel your subscription you will be responsible for paying for the remainder of the subscription term.
This does not affect your right to cancel within 14 days of receiving your first pack by notifying us by telephone or email. It is your responsibility to pay for any return postage should you change your mind.

How can I pay for my subscription and how will it appear on my bank statement?
We accept payment via all major credit and debit cards excluding AMEX. The payment for your subscription will be taken by Symprove Ltd prior to dispatch. You’ll receive an email as soon as your order is generated so you know the funds have been taken and your order is on its way. Currently we cannot accept recurring payments on ApplePay, GooglePay or similar services.
How do I change my payment details on my subscription?

What can I do if I have too many bottles of Symprove?
The easiest way to resolve this is for you to delay your next delivery of Symprove. With the monthly flexible subscription you can do this as many times as you wish. With the 6 month subscription you can delay one order by up to 4 weeks, and on the 12 month subscription you can delay two orders by up to 4 weeks each.

Do you ship overseas?
We can ship almost anywhere overseas. We will pass on the cost of air shipping to the customer and cannot guarantee the speed of delivery due to different practices at customs in various countries. Also, please be aware that you may have to pay import duty/tax when it arrives in the country. The bacteria will be fine to travel this distance, we frequently ship Symprove overseas and our product has a three to four month shelf-life.

We apply a flat shipping cost of £50. For example, the cost to ship the 12 week programme, including shipping is £245. Or, the cost to ship four bottles including shipping is £115.00.

What difference might I see over the 12 weeks?
