What is the gut microbiome?
The large intestine is home to a complex ecosystem containing trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, collectively known as the gut microbiome. This microbiome plays a vital role in many bodily functions, including digestion, nutrient absorption, vitamin production, immune support, and communication with the brain through the gut-brain axis.
Because it influences so many areas of health, researchers are increasingly studying the microbiome’s connection to digestive symptoms such as bloating. Evidence now suggests that imbalances in gut bacteria can contribute to bloating, and that improving gut health through diet, probiotics, and other therapies may help reduce symptoms.
How does the gut microbiome cause bloating?
The gut microbiome works together as a community, and when that balance is disrupted, digestive symptoms can appear. However, bloating itself can develop in several different ways however this article will focus on the involvement of the microbiome.
1. Excessive gas production
One of the most common causes of bloating is excess gas production. Certain bacteria in the large intestine ferment carbohydrates, producing gases such as hydrogen and methane. While this process is normal, some foods can increase fermentation and gas buildup, particularly beans, vegetables, fruits, grains, and dairy products. Diets high in processed foods, sugar, and alcohol may also disrupt the balance of gut bacteria and contribute to increased gas production.
2. Slowed gut motility
An imbalance in the gut microbiome, known as dysbiosis, can also affect how quickly food moves through the digestive tract. Some gut bacteria support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements, while others may slow intestinal movement. When digestion slows down, gas and stool can build up, leading to bloating and discomfort. Research has also shown that certain microbes influence gut motility through their effects on nerves and muscle activity in the digestive system.
3. Poor digestion of certain foods
Not all foods are digested equally. Some carbohydrates, fibres, and sugars are difficult for the body to fully break down before they reach the large intestine, where bacteria ferment them and produce gas. Foods high in fermentable carbohydrates including onions, apples, dairy products, sweeteners, and certain grains are common triggers for bloating in sensitive individuals. A balanced and diverse microbiome may help improve digestion and reduce these symptoms over time.
4. Inflammation of the gut
An imbalanced gut microbiome can cause irritation to the lining of the digestive tract causing inflammation. This is thought to likely disrupt digestion, increase water retention in the gut, alter bowel movements and make the tummy feel more sensitive to feelings of pressure.
5. Damage to the gut barrier
A healthy gut microbiome is key to ensuring the gut barrier integrity. It allows essential nutrients and water to enter the blood stream whilst preventing harmful microbes and undigested food particles crossing this barrier. It is thought that issues with the gut microbiome may allow inflammatory compounds to interact with the immune system thereby causing digestive symptoms.
