Is Symprove worth it? What you’re paying for and how it compares

Symprove can be expensive, so what do you get for the price? Find out what you’re paying for, how it compares with cheaper options and who it’s best for.

Symprove costs more than several other gut health products, which may mean it's not a viable option for everyone.

Several factors contribute to Symprove's cost, from the in-house development of multiple bacteria strains to the rigorous testing each batch goes through and the practicalities of using a liquid solution.

Symprove's subscription costs £49.99, billed every 4 weeks, and you can cancel it at any time. There are often sales, and there’s the option to purchase a one-off 4-week supply.

In this article, we'll look at what you get for this price and how Symprove compares with other products. We'll also cover who might benefit most, and who might not.

What are you paying for?

When you buy Symprove, you get a supplement that requires a complex and precise process to bring it from the lab to your fridge.

It’s also a high-quality supplement, backed by scientific research and continuously tested to make sure that it does what it should.

Here are some key points reflected in the cost:

  • Symprove is a water-based supplement designed to keep its bacteria alive and active throughout the gastrointestinal tract, helping them reach the colon. This is unlike capsules and powders, whose freeze-dried microbes may not all survive the journey.

  • Symprove contains four species of bacteria that we grow in-house using a patented 21-hour precision fermentation process.

  • Every batch undergoes rigorous in-house lab testing for safety and efficacy, and the results are routinely validated by externally accredited labs.

  • Symprove contains gluten-free barley, which provides a natural energy source that helps the bacteria grow and remain stable.

  • Products containing live cultures must be stored at certain temperatures during transportation, which requires special vehicles, additional space and higher energy costs.

  • Symprove is backed by over 15 years of independent scientific research. This includes peer-reviewed clinical trials from UCL and King's College London.

In December 2025, Symprove was awarded Which? Best Buy, the result of the consumer organisation’s first-ever review of live bacteria supplements. The award took into account the quality of research that went into the product, along with the outcomes of human trials.

Does Symprove work?

Around 50% of Symprove users report feeling a difference after 4 weeks, and 94% of users report a difference within 12 weeks.*

Symprove is classed as a food supplement rather than a medicine, so we’re unable to make health claims about our product. But you can see the kind of impact Symprove has by heading to Trustpilot and reading the reviews.

The real cost per day

Either a one-off purchase of 12 weeks of Symprove or a 4-week subscription brings the cost down to £1.79 a day or £12.53 a week. Often, we also offer introductory discounts.

A one-off purchase of 4 weeks costs £59.99 overall. This works out at £2.14 a day or £14.98 a week. It’s similar to the price of many health shots (like ginger or turmeric shots) sold in health and wellness shops.

Symprove vs cheaper alternatives

There are many ways to look after your gut health: your overall diet and lifestyle play a fundamental role, and supplements are just one way that some people support their gut.

Many gut health products offer a cheaper alternative to Symprove.

Large supermarkets often stock capsules, powders and gummies containing friendly bacteria from gut health brands, and some wellness shops sell own-brand versions that can be cheaper still. If cost is a top factor on your gut health journey, these could be good options.

Here are some other things to compare when you’re choosing between products:

Liquids vs capsules or powders

In some liquid products, the live bacteria are awake and ready to work as soon as they arrive in your gut. The surrounding liquid offers protection from your stomach acid, and independent testing shows that Symprove’s bacteria reach your gut alive.

While capsules also give some protection, the encapsulation process may damage some of the bacteria. And bacteria in powder may be most at risk from stomach acid, as a 2021 study suggests.

It’s also worth noting that microbes in capsules and powders lie dormant and take some time to become active again.

Still, capsules and powders have a longer shelf life than liquids. And they don’t need refrigerating, which can make them a more convenient option in some situations.

Single-strain vs multi-strain

Having more strains of good bacteria doesn’t necessarily mean a product will be better for you. In many cases, multi-strain products have similar levels of effectiveness to single-strain products.

What's more important is whether any trials have tested how effective the product is. Evidence from a trial on one bacterial strain, formulation and dose doesn’t tell you anything about a different product.

To date, 20 published studies have evaluated Symprove, including clinical trials from UCL and King's.

Refrigerated vs shelf-stable

Products that need to be refrigerated (like liquids) usually have shorter shelf lives. Powders and capsules that don't need chilling can be more convenient to store and transport.

Who might find Symprove worthwhile?

The people who will get the most from Symprove will be those who:

  • Would like to improve their gut health

  • Are happy to use a liquid-based product that needs refrigerating

  • Are able to commit to taking Symprove once a day for at least 12 weeks

  • Aren’t looking for a quick fix but want to start a longer gut health journey

Some people say they take Symprove to help with specific gut health conditions, while others want to support their gut microbiome more generally.

Getting the most out of Symprove involves commitment, and it doesn't work for everyone. Each of us has a unique gut microbiome, so this type of product can affect people in very different ways.

But if you match the profile above, you may find that it’s a commitment worth making.

Who might Symprove not be worth it for?

There are three main sticking points with Symprove: the cost, the effort and the time needed to see results. If any of these feel like too much of a barrier, Symprove likely won’t be worth it.

For some people, the convenience of capsules or powders makes them a better option than liquids.

Because our guts are so individualised, there’s no guarantee that any specific gut health product will have a particular impact. If this means that the idea of taking Symprove feels like a gamble, it’s probably not the product for you.

Everyone’s journey is personal. Symprove is worth it for some people and not for others.

If you’re not sure and have a specific gut health condition like irritable bowel syndrome, you could also ask your GP or another healthcare professional what they think.

Ways to reduce the cost

Symprove can be more expensive than other gut health products, but a subscription is one way to make it cheaper.

Symprove costs £2.14 a day for a one-off 4-week supply. With a subscription, this drops to £1.79 a day – a saving of £10 every 4 weeks. You’re able to pause, skip or cancel the subscription at any time.

The savings are similar when you purchase more at once: a 12-week supply works out at £1.79 a day.

Symprove also has regular sales offering a percentage discount. Sales are usually flagged on the homepage, and you can hear about them by signing up to the newsletter.

Summary

Symprove is more expensive than some other gut health products, but it's backed by rigorous science and consumer acclaim.

If cost isn't a barrier and you're happy to invest time in your gut health journey, Symprove could be worth it. We've found that 94% of users feel a difference within 12 weeks.*
