Gut microbiome
Collective term generally used to refer to the many microbes – bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses and more – that live inside the gut.

CFUs – Colony forming units
A measurement of viable micro-organisms ie ones that are able to grow. Because they’re so small, it isn’t possible to count or weigh every single one to get a total amount. Instead, we count the number of colonies that grow in a controlled environment within a set period of time.
This is usually expressed in the following way: 6.2 x 10E07 CFU/mL which means there are 62,000,000 CFU/mL.

Live cultures
The presence of a mix of different, live bacteria. You may have seen this used in relation to foods, especially fermented foods such as kombucha and kefir, or starter cultures used in the production of cheese and yoghurt.

Food supplement
Concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with physiological effects designed to complement a normal, healthy diet and lifestyle. They come in a variety of forms, such as capsules, tablets, liquids or powders.

A dietary programmed developed for use under strict supervision. Devised for people who have challenges with the use and digestion of some foods containing these particular FODMAP substances: Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols.
